Every day, millions of cars, trucks, and motorcycles travel
across the roadways of Texas. Our state had more than 20 million
registered vehicles in 2007, the second highest total of any
state. With so many vehicles on the road, accidents that leave
motorists with serious injuries are inevitable. Sometimes those
accidents are deadly. In 2007, more than 3,400 people lost their
lives on Texas highways.
Accidents involving passenger cars can happen virtually
anywhere, from the crowded lanes of high-speed interstates to a
quiet neighborhood cul-de-sac. Drunk driving continues to be one
of the major factors for car accidents, despite tough penalties
for driving while intoxicated in Texas. Driver inattention and
speeding are also to blame, particularly at intersections where
drivers run red lights or stop signs to gain a few extra
seconds. Many Texas cities, including Dallas, have installed
cameras at major intersections to catch red light violators –
but in the meantime, innocent passengers and drivers of other
vehicles suffer serious injuries as a result of preventable
intersection collisions.
Motorcycle accidents often result in serious injuries. When a passenger car or tractor trailer comes into contact with a motorcycle, the weight and size advantage of the other vehicle is indisputable. Cyclists don’t stand a chance against the larger and heavier truck or car. Spinal cord and head trauma are common, as are loss of limb and life. Other drivers often fail to see motorcycles because the much smaller cycle can easily slip into a car’s blind spot – and because car and truck drivers don’t keep a proper lookout for motorcycles that share the roadways.
Trucking accidents are among the most deadly because of the
sheer size of tractor-trailers. These massive vehicles are more
difficult to maneuver, and even the most careful truck driver
may not be able to react quickly enough to avoid an accident.
The drivers themselves can create hazardous conditions by
speeding, driving aggressively or driving while fatigued to meet
tight delivery deadlines. Regardless of the reasons, when a
truck weighing 80,000 pounds comes into contact with another
vehicle, the results can be tragic.
Highway construction projects can also create dangerous driving
conditions. Unsafe or poorly maintained roads can create
unexpected hazards, causing drivers to lose control of their
vehicles. Construction crews are at risk from speeding drivers –
but their work sites can be just as deadly to those behind the
wheel. Lack of proper signage or inadequate warnings to reduce
speed or merge lanes often confuse drivers, causing multiple
vehicle collisions.
If you live or drive in Texas, you should take every
precaution to drive safely and obey the state’s traffic laws.
However, you have little control over the actions of others –
and accidents can happen despite your best efforts. If you are
involved in a vehicle accident caused by another driver or
dangerous road condition, you may face high medical bills and
financial distress through no fault of your own. Legal action
can help to obtain the compensation needed to pay for your
medical treatment – and to ensure the security of your family.
